5 Simple Tips to Speak Spanish Confidently
Do you want to learn Spanish, but can’t hold a conversation? I’ve got some good news for you: You can do it, and you can do it without memorising a million words! There are simple things you can do every day to make speaking in Spanish come more naturally to you. Here are 5 tips to help you improve your Spanish speaking skills.
1. Speak a little every day.
Speaking Spanish for 5 or 10 minutes each day is better than cramming all your speaking practice into one day a week. Describe what you are doing in Spanish, practice conversations with your friends or find a language exchange partner. Consistency is the key. It helps you avoid thinking in your native language and having to translate it into Spanish.
2. Learn useful phrases.
Learning words in context is a lot more helpful than just memorising words. Learn phrases that you might use in everyday conversations, such as ‘hello, how are you?’, ‘I’d like a coffee, please’ or ‘how do I get to the station?’ Use the phrases as often as you can in your daily conversations to make speaking in Spanish more automatic.
3. Don’t be afraid of mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes. But a lot of the time, people are more concerned with not making mistakes than they are with having a proper conversation. Don’t be one of those people. Native speakers will appreciate your efforts to speak their language even if you make mistakes. Plus, it’s one of the best ways to learn!
4. Listen and copy.
Listen to as much Spanish as possible: podcasts, music, videos, TV programmes etc. Copy the pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of native speakers as much as you can. Repeat the words, phrases and sentences out loud to help you memorise them and help you to respond more naturally in conversations.
5. Surround yourself with the language.
Stick post-it notes on objects around your house, change the language settings on your phone or social media accounts, listen to Spanish music, follow Spanish accounts on Instagram or read Spanish blogs. The more you surround yourself with the language, the more you will start to understand, remember and feel comfortable using it.
Conclusion
Learning to speak in Spanish is not about perfection. It’s about practice and being consistent. Do these five things and you will feel more confident speaking Spanish.
